How is the race structured?

Waves of runners leave every 15 minutes, starting at 10 a.m. and ending around 3 p.m. You choose your start time when you register. Waves are limited to 300 people to prevent back-ups at obstacles and the most popular waves (10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) often sell out quickly. We encourage competitive runners (those participants who can run an average 5K in 24 minutes or less) to sign up for the 10 a.m. wave so as to avoid interference from slow-moving runners from earlier waves. Only those runners who’ve purchased an electronic timing chip will show up on the official results. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 overall finishers and certain age-group winners. What will I need to do when I arrive at the race?

First, you’ll take your government-issued photo ID to the big, white Check-In Tent where (1) if you’re a racer you’ll get your t-shirt, entry wristband and timing chip (if purchased), (2) if you’re a spectator you’ll get your entry wristband and (3) if you’re a volunteer you’ll report for duty. If you signed up using the college or military discount, you MUST bring your valid college or military ID or you’ll have to pay a $10 fee in order to run. Finally, you’ll check any bags (we recommend leaving as much as possible in your car) and then head into the Rugged Maniac event area for an epic day of rugged fun!

What should I bring to the race?

(1) Appropriate race clothes. We throw away countless pairs of muddy sneakers and assorted clothing items that are left behind each race. Help us minimize waste by wearing shoes and clothes that are easily cleaned, like spandex shorts and sports bras for girls and board shorts and tech tees for guys.
(2) A valid government ID. You will need your ID to check in to run in addition to purchasing beer in our festival area (if of legal drinking age)
(3) Drinking Water. Although we provide water on the race course and at the finish line, we don’t provide water in the festival area. Beverages will be available for purchase but you can also bring your own non-glass bottles of water.
(4) Rinse-Off Water. We provide rinse-off stations but if you want to avoid the lines, bring a gallon of water per runner to dump on your head after you run!
(5) Blankets, lawn chairs and/or small sun shades. Take a load off after the race and enjoy the rockin’ music in comfort!
(6) Cash. You’ll need money to buy beer and food and credit cards are not accepted by our vendors.
(7) You can’t bring alcohol, weapons or promotional materials for other events to the race. All bags and coolers are subject to inspection and violators of this rule will be escorted off the premises by security.

Can I run as an individual or do I have to be a part of a team?

You can run individually or as part of a team, but we don’t award team prizes.

How do I form a team?

Simply have your teammates sign up for the same start time and enter the same team name in the “team name” section of our online registration system. There’s no limit to how many members are on a team.

What if I want to join a team after I’ve signed up?

How long does it take to complete the course?

Your finish time will depend on your athletic ability. Top times are generally in the low 20s. Most people finish within 30 to 60 minutes.

How do I train for this event?

It’s best to focus on a total-body workout, with an emphasis on long-distance running. Many competitors are members of Crossfit gyms or participate in boot camp-style classes at their local gym. We also offer a free standard training schedule with our Rugged Regimen.

Will there be pictures taken of me along the course?

Maybe. A third party photography company will be on site taking photos of participants throughout the course and will make those photos available for free download in the weeks following the race. However, we can’t guarantee that the photographers will capture an awesome photo of you (or even a photo of you at all), so we highly suggest bringing along a friend with a camera.

Will there be a pre-race packet pick-up?

No. All racers will check in at the race on the day of the event.

Does the course involve swimming?

No, assuming you’re at least 4’ tall (the water obstacles are no more than 4′ deep).

What if I can’t get over an obstacle or just don’t want to do it?

All runners should assess each obstacle as they approach to determine if their fitness level will enable them to complete it without injuring themselves or others. Go around any obstacle that you feel you can’t, or don’t want to, complete. However, skipping an obstacle will disqualify you from placing in the official results.

Do you provide drinking water at the race?

We provide water at one station halfway through the course and again at the finish line. We don’t provide water to spectators or in the festival area. Water and other beverages will be available for purchase from vendors, but you can also bring in your own non-alcoholic beverages (no glass bottles).

What kind of beer will be sold at the race?

The east coast events feature a selection of beers from Harpoon Brewery. The other events will have a selection of national beer brands.

Are there showers to wash off after I run?

You won’t get a private shower with hot water, but we’ll have a public hose-off station with nice cold water for you after you run. Our system has been redesigned to accomodate our crowds, but with over 5,000 runners at each event, lines are unavoidable, especially if people decide to clean their shoes, wash their hair and give their dog a bath while others are waiting. Here’s a tip: bring a gallon of water with you and skip the rinse-off station. You’ll look like a genius to everyone else standing in line with mud in their eye!

Can I run barefoot?

Yes. You are welcome to don any kind of footwear you want. However, you assume the risk of any injuries that result from your decision to do so. Rugged Races LLC does not guarantee that the course will be free of sharp objects, including rocks, splinters, pinecones, glass, nails, knives, swords, chainsaws or anything else whatsoever.

What if I get hurt?

There will be paramedics at the race in case of injuries. The first aid tent will be clearly marked and situated near the finish line.

Are dogs allowed?

You can bring your dog into the festival area to most venues (but not onto the course) as long as you keep it leashed at all times and clean up after it. However, if your dog barks incessantly, is aggressive or just plain doesn’t like crowds, please leave it at home. You’ll be personally liable for any bites or other injuries caused by your dog. If a venue doesn’t allow dogs, we’ll note that in the Race Info Packet.

Why was the actual course different from the course map on the website?

All course maps are projections only and not actual course layouts. Our events are opened for registration many months in advance, but our engineers design the course in the weeks leading up to the race in order to account for terrain changes, venue modifications and municipal restrictions that necessarily affect the course and obstacle placements. This approach allows us to build the most rugged course possible at each location.



When should I show up on the day of the race?

Please arrive at least 1.5 hours before your wave starts. This gives you enough time to park, stretch, hydrate, check-in, etc. If you miss your start time and the race is a sellout, you won’t be able to run.

What if I miss my start time?

If you miss your start time, we’ll make every effort to put you in a later wave, but only if there’s space remaining. If you do miss your start time, go to the Registration Table under the Check-In Tent and we’ll sort you out.

Can I change my start time before the day of the race?

Yes, but only if your desired start time isn’t already sold out. You can log in to our registration system to change your start time, team name, t-shirt size, etc. before the final day of registration. Click here for instructions.

How are your events timed?

Runners can choose whether to get timed or not! If you’re in it to win it or you want your name, age and finish time to be preserved for eternity in the official results list, then select the timing option during registration and you’ll get your very own electronic timing chip (yours to keep!) that’ll record your time as you cross the finish line. But don’t worry, you don’t have to be officially timed to know your finish time. We’ll have a large digital clock at the finish line that’ll be displaying the hour, minute and second as you cross.

Our timing system is pretty high-tech. We’ll assign you a RFID timing chip that you’ll attach securely to your shoe. Our computers will then record what time you cross the start and finish lines. Timing chips must be attached to the runner’s shoes to ensure times are accurately recorded.

When will I be able to see the official results?

Preliminary results will be posted on the event page the night of the event. Official results will follow roughly one week after the race. You can also find the results here.



How old do you have to be to participate?

Racers must be at least 14 years old.

What do the participants get?

As a participant, you’ll get a high-quality tri-blend cotton Rugged Maniac t-shirt, a beer (for those of legal drinking age), professional photos taken of you on the course (though we can’t guarantee you’ll be photographed), a finisher’s medal, and fresh fruit at the finish line!

What do the winners get?

Winners get $40 credit towards Rugged Maniac merchandise, a Rugged Maniac medal, prizes from our sponsors and a free entry to a future Rugged Maniac event of their choice! The overall top male and female finishers also will receive a personalized Rugged Maniac sweatshirt (to be mailed in December). Who qualifies as a winner?

Prizes will be awarded to the (1) top three female finishers, (2) top three male finishers, (3) top male and top female 50 and older and (4) top male and top female 20 and under. Racers must be officially timed, start in the 9:45 am Elite Heat, and successfully complete all obstacles to be eligible for prizes. Winners must also be present at the awards ceremony to receive prizes. The time of the awards ceremony will vary by race and be included in the event information packet.



What does a spectator ticket get me?

A spectator ticket gives you access to the viewing areas on the course and the festival area, which features rockin’ music, beer, food, vendors and festival games! Spectator tickets are only required for South Carolina and New York City. Spectators can attend all other event locations for free! (A parking fee is charged on a per-car basis at these events, so be sure to carpool!)

Are spectator tickets required for children?

Children 13 and under can enter the event as spectators free of charge. Because it’s free, you don’t need to buy a ticket through our online system (doing so would cost you $10)!



Can I get a refund if I can’t attend?

No. All registrations for our events are non-refundable. However, you can transfer your registration to someone else.

What happens if it rains?

The race will not be canceled for rain! This is Rugged Maniac, not a tea party at the retirement home. If there’s lightning, we’ll delay waves until it passes. When the race resumes, waves will go off at 15-minute intervals until the race is back on schedule. If there’s severe weather that prevents the event from being held at all on Saturday, it’ll be moved to Sunday.
